Richard practiced military law in the United States Judge Advocate General's Corps where he rose to the level of the Senior Defense Attorney for the Naval Legal Service Office In Jacksonville, Florida which serviced commands in Kings Bay, Georgia, Jacksonville, Florida, Orlando, Florida and Key West, Florida. In that capacity, he tried over 200 cases in the form of administrative discharge boards, special court martials and general court martials. He tried cases ranging from purely military offenses to common law criminal offenses including rape, robbery, kidnapping and murder. His all-out acquittal rate exceeded the combined rate of all the other defense attorneys.

In November 1989, Richard started as an associate with the Armbrecht Jackson firm. Now he is a partner with the firm, and his practice consists of general civil litigation with a heavy emphasis on the defense of medical malpractice cases and the defense of state worker's compensation cases. Richard also defends cases under the Federal Employers Liability Act, general product liability actions, medical device litigation, and general civil litigation. He is listed in The Best Lawyers In America, Corporate Counsel Top Lawyers, and Super Lawyers.

In addition to a trial practice, Richard's practice includes appellate practice including oral arguments to the Alabama Supreme Court. On one of those occasions, his argument changed the law in Alabama with regard to an employer's right of subrogation and set off when an employee recovers against the third party in the worker's compensation context. In addition, his appeals have clarified the law as it relates to retained foreign objects in medical malpractice suits.
